On May 9, 2017, then-Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price gave a speech on opioid addiction to a group in West Virginia. He decried the use of Medication Assisted Treatment with methadone maintenance or ongoing Suboxone as “just substituting one opioid for another.” But this is a brain-dead statement that flies in the face of scientific reality, much like saying the sky is chartreuse or the earth is flat. Medical school faculty and researchers, physicians in practice, and dozens of other experts in addiction medicine wrote an open letter to him on May 15, 2017, correcting his misstatement. Read that letter here. Only the first two pages contain the content of the letter; the rest is the list of the hundreds of addiction professionals who signed it. Powerful reading.
