Adopting five healthy lifestyle habits increases longevity by more than a decade
A major free article in Circulation shows that by avoiding smoking or excessive drinking, maintaining a normal weight, exercising at least half an hour a day, and eating a healthy diet can substantially increase how long you live. At age 50, women without any of these healthy habits lived to age 79 and men to age 75. Adopting all five extended longevity to 93 in women and 88 in men. Rates of cancer and heart disease were dramatically lower. Poor health practices explain much of the reason for the diminished life expectancy for Americans relative to other advanced countries like Europe or Japan.
